First-generation immigrants have trouble finding jobs.
First-generation immigrants have trouble finding jobs.
The job market does not always favor first-generation immigrants because of their background or difference in skills. This results in immigrants being stuck in jobs without satisfaction. Therefore I wanted to design an app that would give first-generation immigrants an outlet to find jobs they find rewarding and other resources that promote confidence and leadership in job search.

Next, I conducted user interviews and research to identify the needs of first generation immigrants and incoming students.
Next, I conducted user interviews and research to identify the needs of first generation immigrants and incoming students.
To gain deeper insights into user behavior, I conducted interviews and created empathy maps. This research highlighted the significant presence of first-generation immigrants, encompassing incoming students and young individuals from diverse international backgrounds. To address the needs of this demographic, particularly the younger generation, I developed a user-friendly mobile app interface characterized by its intuitive interface. Additionally, I wanted to prioritize inclusivity by integrating accessibility features, ensuring a seamless experience for all users regardless of their abilities.

Jai is a biology research scientist who immigrated to the USA around 20 years ago from India in the pursuit of a well paying stable job. Jai has been working at the same company for 10 years, but does not find their working as rewarding anymore. Jai wants to switch to another job but is afraid of their age and over qualification being a detriment to their applications.

Most competitors had websites or apps that were relatively easy to use with a straightforward design. However some of them were limited to a certain demographic of people or did not have accessible features, both of which are important to promote inclusivity.

I prioritized a clean and user-friendly design while addressing the challenge of organizing multiple elements.
I prioritized a clean and user-friendly design while addressing the challenge of organizing multiple elements.
I aimed for a clean and approachable aesthetic in the app's design. This was achieved by implementing an easily legible font (Avenir) and a color palette comprised of blue and purple to evoke a calm yet creative mood.
The primary challenge lay in effectively organizing multiple elements to ensure a seamless experience without users being overwhelmed. To address this issue, I designed a homepage featuring an overview of all key elements. If users wanted access to specific sections, they could tap on the corresponding tabs in the navigation bar, such as Network, Jobs, Messages, or Profile.

Findings indicated that users were concerned about accessibility, filters, and immigrant specific features.
I conducted an unmoderated usability study with five participants of diverse backgrounds. Each were shown the digital wireframes as well as the low-fidelity prototype. After they reviewed the wireframes they were asked a set of questions regarding the usability of the app.
The findings indicated that users were concerned about three things:
Accessibility: Users wanted to see translation features.
Filters: Users wanted to be able to filter and search specific jobs.
Immigrant specific features: Users wanted to see articles, seminars, or relevant events that were geared towards immigrant specific issues.

Jobxpress is a valuable platform that could help first-generation immigrants or incoming students secure meaningful employment.
Jobxpress is a valuable platform that could help first-generation immigrants or incoming students secure meaningful employment.
Feedback from users indicate the app's potential as a valuable platform for first-generation immigrants and incoming students to pursue their ideal careers, free from age or ability bias.
Furthermore, I gained insight into the complexity of the social issue I address, recognizing that substantial effort and resources will be required for the app's development. While I may not be able to present every conceivable resource, I find satisfaction in the knowledge that my app design could significantly assist first-generation immigrants in securing meaningful employment, should it be launched.
