Context
Digital spaces for emotional expression tend to be too public (e.g., social media) or too private (e.g., journaling apps).
Wish Wall was designed to live in that middle space. The goal was to increase vulnerability by making expression feel low-stakes, beautiful, and quietly witnessed.
The concept draws from the Japanese tradition of Tanabata, where people write wishes on strips of paper and tie them to bamboo trees. The ritual works because it's physical, communal, and anonymous all at once. The idea is that you leave something real in a shared space, and witness that others have too. Wish Wall is an attempt to recreate that feeling online.
As for the visual design, a night sky felt like the right place to hold people's wishes. It's vast enough to hold anything, dark enough to feel safe.
